Belts are very specific from style to style and school to school.
Do not put too much emphasis on rank, it is used to organize people within in an organization.

Our school uses the following system.
white
green
brown
black

Each Goju school may be different. When I started out in Goju it was white, green, brown, black. They changed that for the kids a few years after that to add orange between white and green, and purple between green and brown.

Depends on the type of Karate. In Tae-Kwan-Do (from my school) It was white was beginner, then yellow, orange, purple, green, blue, brown I, brown II, red, and then black. And when you get to black belt status there are several degrees ranging from 1 up to 7 and sometimes beyond. Depending on the school-it can take anywhere from a few months to years.

it depends on the discipline that you're askin about as different schools will have different orders according to the club or world, or national affiliation they have, but the general rule for many Martial Arts is white, yellow, orange, blue, purple, green, brown, red, and then black.

again the kind of discipline or school affiliation is what sets the difference, as it's just general rule of thumb that most Martial Arts go by and not a set rule, there are many different variations.

In my TKD assoc, we have:
White
Yellow
Yellow with stripe
Green
Green with stripe
Purple
Purple with stripe
Brown
Brown with stripe
9 degrees of black

Each organization has it's own system, some having orange, blue & red in addition to or instead of yellow, purple & brown.
The onlything standard is that white belt is the lowest & black is the highest.
