I want to mix some raw egg whites into my post-workout protein shake to mix up the the sources of protein I get. Just wondering if it's okay to mix this in raw? the egg whites that I bought are liquid and the package says they're meant for baking. Just want to make sure I won't get salmonella, I'm not worried about the taste.

Honestly, it's a hard question to answer nowadays. Way back when, egg whites were used all the time in protein drinks. Now with the salmonella scare, and food poisoning cases, etc., you just can't be too sure.

In my opinion, you can't eat or drink a darn thing in this world without someone telling you how it's good or bad for you, so why hurt your brain trying to figure it out? I have a husband & 3 kids to care for, a job to do, a mortgage to pay, a house to clean, a dog to feed, and laundry to fold. Life is too short to worry about what I'm eating and drinking, so I say, drink the raw eggs if you want, and if you get sick, then you know to stop. ;-)

Andy Pann is correct...Eggs are intended to be cooked, even if it is only boiling them for thirty seconds. The human body cannot digest raw eggs. It was an "old training secret" for boxers and wrestlers, but it turns out raw eggs tend to act as a laxative for humans. This was probably the "Training Secret"...be regular and be healthy. There are a wide variety of protein powders available for increasing your protein consumption. Immediately after a workout your body requires complex carbohydrate and a fast acting protein such as whey which is rapidly absorbed into the blood stream. However whey protein is usually in and out of your system within two hours, so you need to consume a protein from a milk source or a micellar protein which tends to be absorbed over a longer period. Try NytroPlex-GF from prosource.net the vanilla tastes great and it is economical to use.

If you have kept the eggs clean and refrigerated you are at a little advantage. The wiping an egg clean will clear off perhaps 75-85 percent of the microbes that might cause you problems. Chilling them (not freezing, that affects nutrients and texture) slows the little bug's metabolism. Ingesting the chilled mix will then put them into your stomach's acid wash and hopefully kill off most of those that would begin to incubate in your gut before they get their metabolisms in the growth gear because of your body temperature. If you want to "make sure", cook the eggs, but wiping before breaking a chilled egg that you immediately use will minimize the microbal hazards.

As long as the eggs aren't tainted in some way (salmonella, etc) you'll be fine. When I was a kid, after seeing the movie "Rocky", I used to put two raw eggs in my Carnation Instant Breakfast every morning. Never hurt me :) (I wouldn't make a habit of it, though)

When I was growing up we would make egg nog for any special occasion or if we were home sick. We made it with eggs, sugar and milk and put it the blender. It never killed any of us and we had 5 of use kids. Adults put rum in theirs

I wouldn't recomend it. Eggs are intended to be cooked, not ingested in the raw form, as far as diseases go. You can get tons of protein from other food sources too. If you're gonna get them from eggs, I'd suggest cooking them.
