I am embarrassed to put a sweater on my 6lb Chihuahua, but I read that they get cold and it is kind to put a little sweater on them on cold mornings. But the dog seems to hate it. What do your dogs do when you put clothes on them?

Ok, based on some of the answers, I am realizing that some of you are missing the question. I don't WANT to put a sweater on the dog. I'd rather not. I just don't want her to freeze to death, but I also don't want to put something on her if it bug the crap out of her.

Yes, my dog hates the hell out of clothes. But my neighbor's dog just loves soft, sweaters and accessories. He even has some of those knit hats with little balls dangling off 'em. The difference? My dog is straight and the neighbor's dog is gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) It's a well-known fact that you'll rarely find a gay Chihuahua. They're too macho. They think they're Dobermans, and you'll never, ever find a gay Dobie. So you need to go for a gay breed. I don't know what those are, since I'm real straight myself, so you'll just have to ask around. Maybe just go to the animal shelter and ask then for a non-straight stray. They're experts and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help.

I think they're fairly wrong ...although when I see one of those Italian Greyhounds in Mid-Winter I just want to start knitting lol Agility is a very warm sport. I'm only doing obedience training and I still get pretty hot even in winter ...a Collie wearing clothes at agility is almost wrong enough to attract the attention of the RSPCA. Maybe you could suggest to her that she'll get better results and longer concentration if she lets the dog go natural. It would be easier to do tunnel work and balance work without the hoodie I have a kelpie with a fairly short coat and when she's cold she just sits on me (c;

I can understand putting a sweater on a small dog with short hair in the winter when it's really cold, but the idea of dressing them up in dresses, skirts or , and jackets is absurd.

My dogs have always ate or tore up the clothes I put on them. Not sure if they hated them or not, but that was my guess. I think all dogs get cold, but I think they make it ok with the fur they have. I guess if your baby acts cold, cuddle 'em up in a blanket or something.

I have a pug/boston mix who loves getting dressed up in sweaters, jackets, funny hats etc. I think it's the pug in him, they love being entertainers and clowns just for the sake of the reaction they get (aaahhhh so cute!!!). But on the whole, I don't like putting him in sweaters and galivanting about in the outdoors, unless it's fridgedly cold out.

I also have a Chihuahua and she hate to put on clothes, so I do it as gently and as quickly as possible, my dog starts to shiver without any clothes on, and at night I cover her up with her own blanket. Best of luck to the both of you.

When I began putting clothes on my dog she would go dogatonic. But after a little while she got completely used to it and now she is fine! Good luck!

The idea of dogs wearing clothes is ridiculous.
of course they hate it.
They are used to being able to scratch if they itch, and used to their skin breathing.
If they aver feel cold, then they will either curl up in a ball somewhere warm, or run to get hot.
Dogs have a natural sense of how to look after themselves, as long as we don't do silly things like tying them up, or getting them vaccinated.
