My cat is about 12 years old (people years) and for about the past 2 years she has intermittently pooped on the floor instead of in the box. Sometimes it makes sense, if I have forgotten to scoop or the litter level is too low. Other times though it seems like she does it just because she is unhappy with me (I haven't given her enough attention, I didn't let her outside when she wanted me to, or if I have been gone for a weekend.) Is there a way to fix this behavior or is it just a case of not teaching an old cat new tricks?
Please help, my boyfriend is ready to get rid of her!

the biggest thing with cats is they do get mad when you leave them for a good amount of time. and if you dont give them attention. or else, its the litter you are using. cats are picky and they like to stick to what they know and they do know if they like the litter. my moms cats do it sometimes to. if you have multiple cats that would be another reason. or if you dont empty it enough for him or her. cats are picky especially being a senior. hope this helps...

I had a bf years ago who had a really sweet cat. Only thing was, if he inadvertently locked her out of his room at night or when he left for work in the morning, she'd crap on his bed first chance she got. Try to remedy the things that set her off. Try not to neglect the box, you can't blame her for not liking that! Maybe install a door so she can get outside whenever she wants. If you're going away for the weekend, see if one of your friends that she likes will check in and play with her a while. If you've been out or had to work late, maybe bring her home a little treat. One of my cats was mad at me for quite a while til one day I was making dinner and gave him some chicken. He didn't forgive me all at once, but it got the ball rolling. And just for the record, I'd get rid of the boyfriend before I got rid of the cat. Saying you should get rid of a friend (furry or not) that you've had for 12 years is really cold. He's probably the reason you don't get to pay enough attention to her anyway! Good luck!

There is a great product called Cat Attract, it's a additive to put in the litter. Or they make litter with it in it already. A bit pricey, but worth it... Good Luck,Oh and BoyFriends are easy er to find than a loving cat.

My cat is 17 (born in 1989). I'm proud to have her this long even though she has accidents. Sometimes she misses the box and sometimes she craps on my bed. She has always had hairball issues and has to crap afterward. I assume, when it's on the bed, that's where she was when she felt the pain. I forgive her and clean it up out of respect for her. I'll never be a 17 years old cat. Must be tough!

one easily over-looked factor in a geriatric cat is litter box location. is it easily accessible? She could be having a hard time getting to it. Also, is it in a private, quiet place? Cats hate having distractions or loud noises (ie. the box is in the laundry room right next to the dryer). Just some things to think about.

Let's start with --- when you got the cat you committed to the cat's life ---- Imagine if you were 90 & your family just wanted to get rid of you because you were having health problems.

My guess, she is old......... and having some problems.
Otherwise, she may be letting you know that she doesn't like your boyfriend (and with good cause apparently)

Take her to the vet, see if they can help.

Then tell your boyfriend GOODBYE - if y'all got married & had kids would he want to discard them or simply just leave you stuck holding the bag????

This speaks much for his character... or LACK OF CHARACTER to be more specific

My cat hated a certain brand (Special Kitty) of cat litter and would refuse to use it. He would also avoid the box if it hadn't been cleaned often enough.

I agree with most of the answers you really should take her to the vet shes older now and cats do tend to get uti's when they are old .....and my personal opinion any man who would ask you to get rid of a friend you have had for 12 years isnt worth the time of day,hes easily ,replaced your kitty isnt .......I know I have 6 of them two who are getting up in years but I would never give them up .we are in this till the end.....
