Which is better quality, Blue Ray or HD-DVD? Will either of them convert DVDs I already own?

Both types of players will play standard DVD and even upconvert them to HD-type signals (720p, 1080i). Right now, HD-DVD has the edge on picture quality. There is general disappoinment in the appearance of Blu-Ray discs, while HD-DVD has received high praise. In addition, Blu-Ray is more expensive. The general consensus is the Blu-Ray is having problems in disc production and that the player is capable of high quality images. See this review:

Blu-Ray is aware of the problems and they are no doubl going to fix it. I would expect then to be no substantial difference between the two formats as far as picture quality is concerned. However, Blu-Ray is inherently more expensive, and could have a hard time competing in price.

Both will play standard DVDs as for the quality, I think both are equal but Blu-Ray has some things that I like better than HD-DVD. I'm waiting until there is a clear winner and the price comes down before I go spending money on a new DVD player.

I'll agree, blu-ray dvd hold up to 50Gb (dual layer) or 100Gb (Four Layer) whereas HD DVD only hold 30Gb (Dual) or 45Gb (Triple). Despite the fact that Blu-Ray holds more info, I believe a lot more manufacturers are supporting blu-ray (sony, dell, samsung, pioneer) than HD (toshiba).. Also, more Hollywood studios seem to be pushing blu-ray than HD.

Both players will read regular DVDs

Convert? Well, I guess you are referring
to upconverting. Yes, they should be able.
Blu-Ray offers the best platform for the
best picture (1080p as opposed to 1080i).

The first generation high-definition players
are having bugs to be worked out. I recom-
mend that you wait for the next generation
players coming out -no doubt shortly. These
will have addressed the 1st gen player's is-
sues, and should cost significantly less.

sony always comes out first ar the races but usualy looses the race. I don't think blue ray is going to be the next standard. It will likely be another mini disk or laser disk! we will see in about a year. Don't forget manufacturing technology is soon going to be cheaper to put media on ram chips than optical disks and they will be more reliable too. Good luck
