Try this:
1) To become faster, you need to become leaner. start eating a proper diet to lose excess fat.
2) Work on your techniques. The freestyle/frontcrawl technique has changed a lot. take a look at the videos of olympic swimmers that will help.
3) try the chase technique. -- If training alone, and your local pool has people doing laps, after you have warmed up, pick one swimmer who is doing laps and is not going too fast. Give him a head start then chase them and try to beat them to the finish 50m line. If you beat them easy, pick another or give them a bigger head start.
4) Work on your technique again and again. It is key.

work on your technique. You wont believe how fast you will become with LESS physical power. For freestyle I would suggest you touch the surface of the water(gently) and strech as far as you could.
