Pumpkins are rare in our tropical country. But I really want to try to make a "Pumpkin Pie". Can someone enlighten me on the difference of taste on these the two vegetables? Thanks.

You can use some Winter Squash types; i.e., Golden nugget, but the flavor will be much different than pumpkin. Don't use Summer Squash or Spaghetti Squash, they have a different type texture. You are better off sticking with Pumpkin!

Absolutely! Pumpkin is a member of the squash family, so you can use any squash that has a fairly delicate flavor. Pumpkin isn't a strong flavor at all.

In fact, when I was traveling with a theatre company in Northern Europe over American Thanksgiving, I made a 'pumpkin' pie out of boiled and pureed carrots. Because the spices are what we mainly taste in a pumpkin pie, the taste was really very close. No one could guess what I'd used, because to them it tasted like pumpkin pie. If you're tropical, I don't know if you can get carrots, but if you can get a delicately-flavored squash, that should work just fine. Happy Thanksgiving.

A friend of mine said that sweet potato or yam would be a better substitute as she has done that before. I don't know about squash. I personally don't like it, but some do. If you add all the spices, it probably wouldn't make much difference since pumpkin & squash are from the same family.
Good luck!

You cannot substitute pumpkin with squash, I dont care how much sugar you put into it. Although pumpkins are related to squash, they have a very different flavor. Also a squash, depending on which squash you want to use, has a softer texture, and if baked into a pie will be squishy, mushy tasting. The best substitute for pumpkin is sweet potato. Their texture is almost identical, as is their flavor. Do you have sweet potatoes where you are from? If not, a yam will also do the trick, but your best option is sweet potato pie. Good luck.

I would go with the canned pumpkin or sweet potatoes, not squash. If you buy pumpkin in the can be aware that there is canned pumpkin and canned pumpkin pie mix. If you are adding all of your spices, you only want the pumpkin. Certain things are great ALL from scratch. Don't be the hero that mashes and puree's her own pumpkin.

Yes, you can-because pumpkins are considered squash. It wouldn't be the same, but it can be done. Ever make a pie with yams? They make a great pie! The pie looks like pumpkin pie, but it's not. It tastes yummy, though, when a recipe if followed. Not sure where mine is.

you can use yams, sweet potatoes, squash or pumpkin interchangeably in any pumpkin pie recipe. Obviously it will always taste slightly different but as long as you like squash, yams, sweet potatoes or pumpkin, you will like the pie.
