I think the R is King, but how about the other two?

These simply represent:
R- Roi or King
D- Dame or Queen
V- Valet or Jack
1- Ace

R- Roi.= King.
D- Damme.= Queen.
V- Villain = Jack.

The indices are in French: V (Valet = knave), D (Dame = queen) and R (Roi = king).
