(1) There are many flaws in interpretations of most religions.
(2) Christianity evolved around the time when slavery was considered normal across almost all countries adhering to religious faiths prevalent in their territories and times. The Bible preceded the advent of Christianity-the birth of Jesus.
(3) If you associate Christianity with Jesus, I don't know that Jesus owned slaves or that he was in a position of power when he was alive to able to abolish anything. His was a language of love, not power, but then I am not Christian or of Christian descent to be able to speak with authority on Jesus.
(4) With changing times, as human awareness and understanding increase and the freedom of expression, other freedoms' increase, I am sure that a few years from now, many of the beliefs and way of life today will be considered abnormal, and who knows, we may have another Jim_Darwin type character asking similar Q's on this or some other forum?

Just because it happened in the Bible doesn't mean that God is saying it's okay. The fact is that there is sin in the world. Because of sin, the world functions in a way that God did not originally plan. His original plan was that of a sinless world. But He gave men free choice (so that we'd not be robots, but rather would honor and glorify God by choosing Him) and we sinned. Now that there is sin the the world, God allows bad things to happen - storms, famine, murder, slavery, etc. The verses you cited acknowledge the slave's status as property of their master. Slavery is evidence of how depraved man is apart from God. The only conscious Christians have is the conviction that God gives us when He shows us how messed up we are without Him. Christians are not better than other people. We just recognize our depravity and have found a Savior to deliver us from the spiritual death that we deserve.
I realize you probably won't respect my humble attempt at an answer, but I wish you the best in your search for Truth.

You sound as if you want everything but the truth with your apologetics statement, do you even know what the word means?
Back then it was completley legal and right to have slaves, but it wasn't GOD's design it was mans. Through the years just like it was in America, slavery became abolished, stricter laws and enforcement of those laws made owning slave illegal. There were laws on how slaves were to act and how their owners were to treat them. GOD has laws for everything.
And just so you know with the establishment of the NT or new laws, and covenant.
New laws and covenants were put into place. Many of the OT laws were oblished for different laws.
For instance in the OT you were allowed to have an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth mentallity. Jesus said turn your cheek and love your neighbor. But you arent' arguing that one. yes owning a slave is wrong morally, legally and ethically. Praise be to GOD who wants to set everyone free.

Christians are "conscious" of the fact, that the good old bad old days are good and gone!!
It was an abomination to enslave anyone, let alone children, maybe the world grew up, and stopped being pegans, without a conscience, and started becoming civilized, tho it took along time for that to happen.
In every land
Hardness is in the north of it
Softness is in the south
Industry in the east
And fire and inspiration in the west.

Perhaps you should research in the old testament, and you will find the laws that governed the releasing of the servants. They were required to free them after a time of six years, and then were freed. Unless they chose to stay voluntarily. This is at the beginning of Exodus 21, where you were referencing from.

Hi - This is not a sarcastic answer - if you are going to read the Bible you have to do it with very selective filtering and frequent skipping over sections. I've asked at least a dozen people who were very knowledgeable about the Bible about slavery and they just looked at me blankly.
I have no idea how they were able to ignore those portions.

Christians headed the movement to abolish slavery in the USA.
Today, Muslims in Sudan and Mauritania still practice human slavery.
Do the math.

I don't think the practice was encouraged or discouraged, which would make it permissible, but not a commandment from God to do so. But hey, it was different back -- oops.

Morality isn't something that can result from bribes and coercion.
Christians, Muslims, and most other religions base their behavior on the belief that God will reward or punish them for it. They have no morality whatsoever.

$5 says a bunch coming running and scream "that's in the old testamant and god told us not to follow that anymore bc apparently he didn't mean what he said and we should only quote passages from it when it shows christianity in a good light instead of an evil light like it really is."
That's exactly what they'll say. Do you hear the way they talk? It makes me sick.
