Who at pharmaceutical companies comes up with the names for drugs? Why was Soma Compound named such? Did the namer of this drug know that muscle relaxants are something people use to get high off of and make a bad joke of it, or is this coincidence made of the nickname for a chemical compound? In brave new world soma is the drug dispensed to the masses to relieve the stress of living an entirely mind controlled utopian existence.

It's not quite that complicated. If you don't read into it so much, soma is basically something that you take when you feel bad and it makes you feel better. Probably a great thing to name the drug! Anyone who's read that book will make the association with something that'll make you feel good. I think it's clever.

Soma is Carispordol so no, sorry, not from Brave New World.

I have a comic above my desk that I've had for years. It's a doctor and nurse and they're sitting around an Ouija board. The doctor says, "Well, I don't know what it is but we'll prescribe a month's worth and see if it helps!"

Huxley was correct regarding human's social condition and the deterioration of society. Orwell was correct in his portrayal of the government as a tyrannical leader. Both have accurately predicted the future, but I fear it's going to exceed their expectations in that it's looking grimmer than ever.
