Try these. They basically say that there are a lot of factors, but mainly genetics and chemical imbalances.

Google for sites, but...
There are three types of depression: Situational Depression (your dog just died, you got fired, whatever), Endemic Depression (brain chemistry imbalance needing long term management) and Bipolar Depression, which is one side of Bipolar Disorder and a distinct type of depression.
How you get Situational Depression is fairly obvious, the other two have strong genetic components, so you may be born with a susceptibility that is later triggered by environmental factors.
But you don't 'get' depression or bipolar.

Examine your family history for both. But to be depressed, all you have to do is focus on things that make you sad. In any case, if you get regular exercise (no kidding, physical health and mental health go hand in hand) and focus on good things happening, you can get through most anything.
My mother had mental health issues and was very intelligent and stubborn. You are doing great to ask questions about how it happens. She was never really diagnosed as she would never go to a doctor. Shock treatments in the 1950's kinda ruined it for her. But mental health treatments have come a long way since then. And there is a lot out there that can make a huge difference in one's life.
However, I would ask how one overcomes depression or stabilizes being bipolar. The answers are much more fun than how you get there.

Depression can happen to ANYONE at ANY time. Bipolar disorder is usually passed genetically and is characterized by swings from mania (ups) to usually moderate to severe depression soon afterward.
You can be depressed without having bipolar.

According to leading researchers - Bipolar Disorder is the most commonly "underdiagnosed" disorder in America.... I think it is the most OVER diagnosed.
Depression can be the result of NORMAL HUMAN EMOTIONS running their course.... sometimes a good therapist is needed but not medication.
It is important to recognize the difference between situational depression (my mom died and i hate my job) and chronic depression (i have everything I want and a really good support system of people who love me but I have been depressed for 2 years anyway).

Usually it is hereditary. But it can be brought on by excessive stress or a major life changing event.
