I do not harbor hate in my heart.
The gun answer is so ignorant that I usually do not let it bother me.
Here are the flaws behind this ...
You can't carry a gun everywhere. Shooting an unarmed person is cold blooded murder. Guns are offensive only weapons, it can't block an attack. A person can punch faster than they can draw a gun. A gun will not help you control your friend who has had too many beers and is acting like a fool.

I don't hate it per se, it just annoys me. The "martial arts can't defend against a gun" IS a true statement, but it's also a cliche and annoying statement. Guns aren't the only thing people have to worry about. People also get raped, beaten, strangled, and mugged. Martial arts DOES defend against those things.

I am a black belt and a gun owner. Gun owners and martial artist both tend to imagine situations where they have the advantage. Martial artists imagine they are within 6 feet of someone who is dumb enough to just stand there pointing a gun at them. Gun people think the martial artist is 10 feet away or more. The man with the gun always has the advantage but can give up his advantage by doing something stupid.
A guy above me said that people with guns were cowards and did not deserve to be in a fight. If I was thirty feet from you and were in a life and death struggle, I would kill you with a gun and you could put on your tombstone "killed by a coward who did not deserve to be in a fight"

Ask yourself WHY you don't like it?

Truth is that bruce lee or tito ortiz or rickson gracie cannot stop a bullet (only bruce leroy could do that).

Seriously, people don't say that to be tough, they say it because it is true. That no matter how long you train, and how good you are the simple fact is that even an untrained guy with a knife or a gun IS a deadly threat to you.

Yeah, you might have the advantage if you get the drop on him but realistically when is that ever going to happen? The reverse is MORE likely to happen of someone carrying a weapon (thus willing and looking to cause bodily harm or rob you) than you attacking someone with a weapon by surprise.

It is realistic that they might not be able to draw the weapon, but if they do, they will completely change the dynamics and advantage of the fight. There are RBSD teachers (reality based self-defence) that address this (dog brothers- ive seen some good video footage of weapon defence and "pulling out" when someone has the drop on you with a weapon). There are times when you will be without a weapon, but those are the smaller percentage of times and in more secure places generally. The times you NEED to fight, a weapon (gun or knife) are better for self-defence than bare hands. True there can be legal issues depending on the situation and the state, but if it is a true self-defence situation then you would be justified in pulling the weapon and using it.

The simple fact and truth is, no matter how strong you are, or how good you are, you will NEVER be as deadly as a bullet or knife. One punch or one kick may not disable your attacker.

It may be frustrating to hear, but the "gun" comment should not irritate you, it should bring you back to reality and you should put your training in the proper context and take all this into account and explore the realistic applications of your unarmed martial arts and the advantages and limitations and legal implications of carrying and using weapons.

Guns are a solution to fighting a martial arts practitioner, but that is already a known problem and hearing it regurgitated over and over really gets boring. A gun may also not be a viable option and may take longer to draw, leading to a knife in the gut, especially in tight quarters.

Yeah, I know what you mean dude, my question is to them though is what if you don't have a gun? then what? what if the gun jams? etc.

How about if it was a friend or family member who was drunk or had too much medication? or had been doing drugs and got out of hand? guess they'd still shoot them anyway huh? and take their life without a second thought.

or if the opponent happens to blind you or manage to knock the weapon away?

It's also my feeling that any fool can be a punk and pull a trigger and take the pu**y way out in a confrontation, and these days more laws are strict about using a gun.

In Florida, we have the 10, 20, Life law: if you pull a gun especialy in a robbery you get ten years minimum, fire the gun it's 20 yrs, injure or kill anyone and you get life; and I'd imagine that in any confrontation outside of law enforcement's involvement, those same rules would be just as applicable in an altercation between two people on the street.

it's just a way for them to get easy points with no thought to what the meaning of the question really is; so they just blurt out the first thought that comes across their mind or show their ignorance because they've never had to be in that type of situation before.

and to me it just shows what kind of mindset they posess, shoot first worry about the consequences later, especialy if the individual dies from wounds inflicted by the gun.

whereas Martial Arts is more of a life saving training than life taking.

Yes a blind person can be trained to fight but the system of fighting would have to be a close quarter combat system where grappling techniques are used. You see the blind individual would have a difficult time (not impossible) fighting. But again this is my view for a better answer you should go to your Sensei since even though i teach I do not teach blind students and don't have the required experience to be an authority for this.

The gun answer guys are just jerking your chain.

But for the sake of accuracy, it should be said that shooting is a martial art.

You are quitre correct.

A gun is a cowards weapon, no honorable fighter would use one or even suggest it. Any Idiot can stand 30 feet away and pull atrigger, that way they don't have to even see their enemy. It makes it nice and clean and anonymous. If someone can't stand face to face with an opponent, look them in the eye, watch as the life drains out of them, then they don't belong in a fight. Besides most peple don't have the training to use a gun in a fight. I can only say this, anyone that shoots at me better kill me with the first shot becasue no one alive has ever goten a second.
