RMS is the continuous power an amp can produce at any given time.

MAX is rarely ever reached and is therefore not a good means of measurement.

Manufacturers list MAX because 1200 looks better than 400 doesn't it.

They're all right. RMS is the constant power where max power isn't really used. Are you working with power devices like an amp or a fridge in an RV?

Root Mean Square - a measure of continuous power, as opposed to peak power.

RMS = Root Mean Squared, if I remember right it is .707 of peak.
