She took me real seriously, and called and told the person I was thinking about killing them. What is the person going to do to me now? I am worried.

Are the police going to contact me? What kind of legal trouble am I in?

It was her legal duty to warn the person. There is case law on it, which I seem to remember is called Terzoff, or something like that. If she did not warn the potential victim and you did harm him, she would be held liable.

Just goes to show you it is not wise to say just everything and anything that comes into your mind to a shrink.

By law and as a matter of ethics, the therapist had a duty to warn the person. This law is not uniform from state to state as to who to report suicidal and homicidal intentions, but all states require reporting of these types of intentions. When a person says something like this, they are ALWAYS taken by their word by a trained mental health provider. This as well as things such as reported abuse of a child, elderly person, or person with a disability are exceptions to confidentiality.
A poster mentioned the Tarasoff case, which indeed did rule that in California, mental health providers had the duty to warn intended victims. Later a case was tested in Texas based on the findings of the Tarasoff Case and did not hold up. In Texas, the law remains that the provider has a duty to advise health care professionals, and or police of a suicidal or homicidal intention, but there is no duty to warn an intended victim. If you want to continue the therapeutic relationship, discuss it with the therapist. If you do not feel comfortable, seek another, but stay in therapy. Having homicidal ideations is serious business. Please continue treatment. Good luck.
You asked a great question; keep in mind that in any therapeutic relationship, there are limitations to confidentiality.

As far as I know, therapists must maintain confidentiality unless a patient threatens to hurt someone or unless a court of law subpoenas the therapist to testify.

Your therapist is required by law to inform a person about a threat on their life. She had to take you seriously, she had no choice. If this was a joke, I hope you learned your lesson.

Because of all the school shootings and all the violence and terrorism; psychiatrists, other mental health workers, teachers, guidance councilors, clergy, and employers and co-workers, are supposed to report anything that sounds threatening. I believe if they know something, and something happens, they could get in trouble. I guess the only person you can say anything to is your lawyer.

What did you want her to do, laugh? What's wrong with you saying something like that anyway? She did what she is legally bound to do, to inform anyone when their life is threatened. I suggest you seriously think about why you said that and remember the ramifications, then maybe you will think twice before saying something like that again.

i'm surprised your therapist didn't dive for cover lol
you might want to avoid coming within 50miles of that person for a while, or you could scare them, that would be funny, but only if you don't really kill them
