As a rescuer of animals, I understand them saying know to you. Most of the animals that come into our rescue are owner turn in, the number one reason is child lost interest in the pet, followed closely by I got it for my child and they where not taking care of it, and I did not want to take care of it either.
If you really want a pet, you need to show that you are becoming more responsible. Do things with out having to be asked, also ask if you can help out, cooking cleaning dishes or mow the lawn or rake leaves, for a week or so. If you have a low grade in a subject work to bring it, up. Do not bring up wanting a pet. Then after that ask if there are ways you can help out around the home, trash, dished sweep or mop, ask for chores. If you show that, you are becoming more responsible you may not be over looked the next time you ask.

Hi
I dont know how old you are...
It may not be so much they feel you are not responsible as much as getting a dog is a WHOLE family thing... Its not like a Hamster or a fish.
There are VET bills, even for healthy dogs.. they need shots and Flea and Heartowrm meds This all adds up in a hurry.
Then there is the training of a dog and it takes a lot of time to do that.
You cant just leave it alone when you go away like a cat,..so you have to find somebody to watch it or Kennel it.. more cost
I would guess your parents might be happier to see you begin with something less demanding , less expensive, and better suited to a first pet maybe???
Fish, Hamster, Gerbil... Even a bunny is less work
Maybe ask for a fish or something first show th em how responsible you are...... and read up on your dogs.. later then you can talk about it, and know the costs and what will be involved.
Good Luck

Short answer - grow up and move out.
Longer answer - what are their reasons? Who will be responsible for the dog when you go to college? Remember, dorms won't allow pets, and since it would be YOUR dog, it is kinda unfair to ask Mom to take care of it when she didn't want it to begin with! Are there allergy issues? Are you possibly, in their eyes, not as responsible as you think you are? What are you going to do with a dog when it interferes with what you want to do? (HINT - this is why my husband and I travel with three Chows! Thus, we don't cruise, and hotels that allow dogs are limited!)
There probably isn't much you can do to change their minds.

What type of dog do you want, if it is a big type breed that may be the reason. How long have you wanted one? I have asked my dad about getting a cat all year and finally now he has said I probably get one next year.
He went from;
Your not getting one, when you move out > to > yeah, alright, once we have fixed up the backyard you should be able to get one.

ask them for a compromise, like maybe a small breed dog... and then you can alwasy do what i did to my mom.. I just brought one home anyway and made sure i had a sob story to go alng with the dog like.. "Mom he was getting kicked by kids at the park and squeeling, and i felt bad.. my mom fell in love with them though,, ha ha.. i wouldnt want you to get in trouble though.. But seriously ask them for a compromise.. tell them that every child needs a pet to help them learn how to be more responsible and see how that goes!!

Sorry, I can not help you go against your parents.
Try to reason with them. Bargain with them. They may know something you do not.
I feed and water 3 dogs every day that I did not want my children to have. The children are gone, but they left the dogs.

Just wait until you are grown, and out of their home. You never know, they may have very good reasons for not letting you get a dog. When you're older you may realize this.

i know the feeling. (we do have a mini schnauzer now, though.) Well, i don't know if this really would be the case with your parents (espacially your mom..), we went to a dog cafe and my mom saw this tiny shitzu (believe me, it was CUTE!) and she instantly fell in love. the next day, we went & got a schnauzer pup =] he's 3 yrs old & well loved. Anyways, try negotiating with them, like convincing them that you'll do whatever they'd like you to do if they get you a pup. (also try promising straight A's...that works with everything for me) hope this helped =]
