uvula . does it have a purpose, yes, it aides in swallowing and gag reflex. do you need it, no. in fact a lot of men have whats called a UVULOPALATOPHARYNGOPLASTY. which basically takes that out, along with other tissue in your throat that makes you breath easier and snore less. now you know

It's called an uvula -A cone-shaped projection hanging down from the soft palate in the oropharynx. The uvula may become swollen and enlarged in people who snore.

Uvula It closes off the mouth and nasal cavities when talking, swallowing, etc. Yes, it does serve a purpose...just wish I had one.
