Hear me out. Many people on here seem to think that atheists have no basis for morality.

The Christian basis for morality appears to be the Bible. If the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, than it's wrong. What if it said that homosexuality was a good thing? Would it automatically make it right?

If you base your morality on a book instead of your life, why does that give you a 'higher moral code' than people who simply don't do things that hurt others?

I suggest that atheists have a higher moral code than Christians for that reason - that they thought about why some things are right and others are wrong instead of getting their infalliable truths out of a book.

What do you think?

I completely agree with you on that. When's the last time Atheists tried to stop Christians from marrying someone they love?

Did you know that Christians and Catholics have a much much much higher divorce rate than Atheists? And this was found by a Christian study, in the hopes of proving that "saved" marriages are better. Isn't divorce considered a sin?

I think you are making things up, and I am a Christian who believes that many Atheists have more morals than professing Christians. Just because you say you are something does not make it so, its not enough. You must walk the walk and talk the talk.

You can preach that you are good all day long then go out and cheat on your partner, be jealous of everything your friend or neighbor has, never give to the poor and look down on them just because they don't wear the right clothes, you see. You have to practice what you preach.

You are also judging, what we base our morals on and obvious point you know nothing about, morals are usually inbedded in you before you even know about the good book are old enough to read, if you were lucky enough to have parents who cared enough about you to show you the difference between right and wrong. And even when some haven't gotten this from upbringing they still turn out good at heart which is what really counts not what religion you follow.

Sorry but you asked what I think and you got it.

Neither is more moral than the other. You say you do what you must as long as you don't harm others. They feel the same way. There's nothing wrong with either of these beliefs. . You both believe in right and wrong. And the majority of people try to live by what they believe is right i.e. their morals. Christians basically believe in what they are taught in their churches or in their Bible. Atheists believe, as you said, what they believe after making informed decisions. Don't you think that Christians have made those same decisions based on how they are informed?
They have their Bible (which they believe to be inspired by their God) and their faith in Jesus and their God, just as you have your own strong belief (or nonbelief).
I personally am wiccan, but I was raised southern baptist, so I know how christianity can be close minded. I was taught that people like atheists or other religions were just misinformed themselves and hethen and therefore going to hell. And I was not to read about or try to learn those other religions in amy way. I have of course, learned better than that. But I do know that people of all religions think they are right and therefore their morals must be better than the other's.
So I am saddened that we have all come to using moral values against each other, when most of our values, in effect, are basically the same.
Peace and blessed be.

Do you really want to know what I think?...OK, here goes....

God created us male and female for a reason. He warned us against homosexuality and He hates it. It disgusts people to no end, and it's what brought AIDS (you might not believe that, but it's true).

Another thing, just b/c someone believes in the Bible, doesn't necessarily mean they follow it. There are, unfortuanately, people who say they believe...but what does that matter? even the devil belives...

Also,no one says that Christians have a "higher moral code" than everyone else. Everyone know the difference between good and bad. That came when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

If you took the time to prayerfully read the Bible...and earnestly read it w/ all your heart, not looking for ways to put it down or disprove it....you'll see whats the truth.

I hope you take my advice.
God bless you.

Yes some atheists have good morals. They go by what their conscience says. Whether or not they believe that there is a God or not is a different question. But you could say that just because they aren't Christian they aren't moral. This is not necessarily true.

A person who is moral because they beleive it is the right thing to do ranks higher than one who only does moral things out of the fear of punishment or the promise of reward.

Is a Chrisitan more or less moral than an atheist or any non chrisitan? the answer is no, a Chrisitan is no better than a non chrisitan, but he or she i infinantly better off. it is like two men seted on a plane that will have to jump. one has a parachute and the other dosent. neither is better than the other, but the man with the parachute is certainly better off than the one not wearing a parachute. the diffrence will be seen when they Jump from 20,000 feet. Our so called rigtheousness is nt impressive to God, it is impressinve and justifying beofre men, but God sees the inward parts, and that whic is higly esteemed among men are an abominatin to God. let me explain by asking you a few questions....
Do you consider yourself to be a good person?

Have you ever lied (even once--fibs, white lies, etc.)? Ever stolen (anything--the value is irrelevant)? Jesus said, "Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you ever looked with lust? If you have said "Yes" to these three questions, by your own admission, you are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart; and we’ve only looked at three of the Ten Commandments. there are seven more to go. have you ever hated someone? God sees this as Murder of the heart. The Bottom line is , if God judged you and I by this standard were not good people. the bottom line is that it dosen matter whether we get our moral standards from a book or not, its whether those moral standards are true, and your conscience affirms the truth of these commandmets. you knew it was wrong to lie and stel and lust, this is true because God has writtne his Law on the heart of every man. On the day of Judgement, you will be without excuse, and the penalty for your sinis death and hell, but God has done something spectacular. we have failed and broken Gods Law, But God sent His Son to take our punishment: "God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." He was bruised for our iniquities. Jesus then rose from the dead and defeated death.
Your own so-called “goodness” can’t get you into heaven any more than mine could. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. He is the "Door," the only "mediator." There is salvation in no other name, so repent (turn from sin) and put your fiull faith and trust in Jesus to save you. if you will do this, God will forgive your sins and grant you everlasting life.

"he who trust his own Heart is a fool" (proverbs 28:26)

I agree. The question for Christians is not one of morality -- it is obedience or disobedience. Morality is making informed choices about situations one faces. Atheists have no dogma to fall back on, therefore, they must make informed choices.

Atheists are more moral than Christians.

I agree. In fact, if you read Leviticus it condones behavior that is clearly immoral. Even modern Christians know that slavery is immoral, that stoning someone to death is immoral, etc.

I would even say that God was immoral to "test" Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his son. Why do Christians think God was just to do this?? I feel like I have an inner moral compass that cries out at the injustice.

Wrong! We all have a moral compass called a conscience given by God. I didn't need God to tell me being a homosexual was wrong. I mean come on give me a break. That is wrong on so many levels. Some people have consciences that have been warped beyond belief. They are twisted around so bad that wrong has become right and right has become wrong.
