When is tick is found embedded in the skin, use a fine pointed tweezers at the point of attachment, and grasp the tick head firmly. Remember to wear latex gloves when doing this.
Using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin.
It is critical to NOT squeeze the tick body at any time -- this can inject more potential pathogens in to you or your pet while the tick is embedded.
Cleanse the skin with mild soap and water.
If a small part of the tick breaks off, you can try to remove it as you would a splinter, but it is probably best to leave it alone. The body will 'eject' it in time.
Place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. Tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important.

#1 - Don't put a match to the tick - it will cause the tick to vomit and inject more potentially harmful fluid into the cat.
#2 - Be really careful about pulling it out because you risk pulling off the body and leaving the head embedded.
#3 - What everyone said above about ticks breating through their skin while feeding is correct. So although it does take longer, using anything that blocks the ticks pores is the safest way.

Actually I've heard to put vaseline on the tick. Then, it won't be able to breathe because it is so viscous, so it may come out by itself. If it doesn't, I usually just part the fur around the tick on my cats when they get one and pull it out with tweezers. That doesn't guarantee that the head will come out though, so I recommend trying the vaseline first.

Actually the tick not being able to breathe is the trick but peanut butter works best as it is not toxic in any way. Whoever said keep the tick was also right.

Safer to go to vet, but if you try, My family would take a stick match, light it, and then blow it out. White still very hot,, touch the hot end of the match to the tick, and it will back out. If you pull a tick out, it may break off the head in there, and can cause infection, then you have to go to the vet anyway.

I like everyone elses' carefully evaluated answers, but I prefer to have someone gently but firmly hold the cat, while I press an alcohol soaked cotton swab on the tick. when it loosens up, grab it with some tweezers and put it somewhere where you can burn it, I've heard that's the only way they can die.. of course, my grandpa banged one with a hammer and that seemed to work. Good luck!

try to use dawn dish soap on a cotton ball push on the tick and turn clockwise, it works great and if it does not come out right away use a klenex and pinch it with your fingures, the dawn will cause it to back out most of the time it will come out on the cotton ball if not you will be able to pick the whole thing out with your fingers, just make sure you get the head, good luck

Put nail polish on it. When a tick has it's head buried in somethings skin, it breathes through it's butt. Wait for it to either die or come out for air. Pick it off, and then burn it to make sure it died.

oil works
but vasilie works better
wen u aply it keep the cat on ur lap
wen the tic comes out u have to remove it from him so it dont go back in
dont forcebly remove till it comes out on it,s own
otherwise it will vomit under the skin
that is how the transmit diseases
expireance
