Pain is something that teaches, if you put your hand on a hot stove, pain is what tells you to pull it back. Pain shows us what is and where there is danger. Pain when used properly can have good results.
Question is how you are using pain and for what effect.

IMHO we feel pain because we're on this material world. It is just that simple. By existing on the material plain, we are subject to joy and sorrow, sucess and failure, etc. However, it is thouroghly possible to transcend these feelings by the knowledge that not only are we not these bodies, but our minds are what prevent us from seeing the world as it truely is. The mind can be one's best friend, but only if s/he has mastered it. Until then, it is our worst enemy.
Peace my friend.

So we'll know to protect ourselves. That's one of the problems with people who have leprosy. They can't feel pain on their affected parts and so tend to hurt themselves unwittingly.
Incidentally, that's why you need to be carefully with painkillers. They might mask something seriously wrong that needs to be corrected.

pain is necessary to life. there is actually a disease where you are born unable to feel pain. most of these children do not make it out of childhood. anytime they are sick or injured, they do not know it, and eventually they just die of their acculumated illnesses that are never treated. imagine having your appendix rupture and being unaware of it.

We feel pain because these bodies are weak and alive.
The body is weak and the Spirit is strong.

because otherwise we'd get hurt and bleed to death without realizing the circumstances. That is what the disease of leprosy is all about.

So we know if there something wrong it signals us when there is a problem. Like a fire alarm tells a fireman there is a fire.
