It really does sound like Autism to me. And I do agree with the person who mentioned Sensory Integration Dysfunction as well. Your best bet would be to have your son evlauated at a Behavioral Clinic or by a Developmental Pediatrician. Many people don't realize that a lot of children with Autism do start out as 'talkers'; but begin to lose their vocabulary. That's one of the biggest indicators of Autism. But, whether it be Autism or something else, please remember that he's not being 'bad' or 'misbehaving'. He's not even 2 years old yet. And if there truly is something going on with him Neurologically, he has no control over it. I wish you and your son the best of luck.

first of all , my son had a 1700 word vocabulary at 19 months and he has ASD autistic spectrum disorder. He has a great vocabulary but couldn't string words together but with 6 months of speech therapy and other therapy he has made leaps and bounds
My son never did those things such as head banging. he would throw something if he got frustrated it at. My son is high functioning and has always been affectionate and loves to loved and wrestled with and by his us and his sister.

He looks like your average american kid, you would never know by looking at him that he has autism and it was a huge shock for a lot of people who know us when he was diagnosed cause they were like but hes so smart!

YOU NEED TO HAVE him looked at by your peid and once he hits 18 months or 2 yrs old have him assessed. autism most times rears its ugly head between 18 to 3 yrs old and in some other cases where it might be more severe, a bit younger.
You can email me if you want to ask more questions or need support!!

also do a check list as well that is online

if he does have autism, ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD =)

ps liz, you dont have an autistic child do you ? you should meet me my beautiful social butterfly autistic son.

He most likely is autistic or has a form of autism. Each case is much different since there's no 2 children alike and will vary from child to child. Some children with autism are very smart, smarter then their parents, while other are at the extreme level of low intelligence.

On the other hand you might want to get him checked out for Aspergers syndrome which is allot like autism but a different condition all together.

Call your child's physician and let him know of your concerns. Most cities have "achievement centers for children" that will test at no charge. Please go as quickly as possible to ease his frustration. It may be something completely different besides autism. There are many problems children can have including learning challenges. I would start with the doctor and then call a local United Way agency if you cannot afford a doctor and have them refer you to an agency that will test him for free. Good Luck to you.

I think you really need to talk to your son's doctor and maybe see a child psychologist. Figuring out what is going on will help you to know how to handle the situation. Best wishes.

Personally it sounds like Sensory Integration Dysfunction.

Poor thing, he sounds frustrated. He may get better when he becomes verbal. You may want to try some baby sign language with him.

take him to his Dr and have a full physical. Tell the Dr. all of your concerns don't leave anything out. if you are not happy with his/her answer, get a second or even third opinion. this is not acceptable behavior. he may need counceling.
good luck

It sounds like austism to me. They usually dont like socializing, ESPECIALLY with the mother (coz the bond is stronger with them), they prefer playing by themselves and have an obsession and specific detail to ONE thing, they're happiest when they're alone, they have abnormal behaviours of hitting themselves or tantrums when someone gets close to them, etc.
Please see a child psychologist as they can evaluate your child further and give him behavioural therapies which will really help in the long run.
God bless.
