I found two types of mats that work okay (nothing works really great). Try either a welcome-mat type, with short, stiff bristly astro-turf type stuff. Or, a rubber mat, also with short bumps but they are soft and rounded. (Sorry, hard to describe). I find that regular carpet mats don't help much. Plus, my cats jump out of the box and sling litter everywhere, so honestly what works the best for me is a good ol dustbuster (the little hand-held cordless vacuums that you can keep plugged in). That way you can just suck up the litter around the box once or twice a day without having to drag out the vacuum cleaner.
Hope that helps!

Some pet stores sell special mats to keep cat litter from being spread all over. If I used a litter box, thats what I would try. My cats go outside.

Your cats are probably charged up with static electricity and the little particles are getting stuck to their fur. Im not 100% sure how to fix this but try putting your kitty litter box somewhere else, try a few different spots... also you could try a metal kitty litter box

certain brands of litter are made so that the cat won't track as much. i use pet gold's scoopable litter and have some cardboard around the litter box. it traps the litter that does get out and provides for a nice scratching post.

Put large piece of the plastic stuff like astro-turf. A big enough piece that they MUST walk across it for a bit before leaving the room. If the box is in a porch area or bathroom, get something a bit nice and carpet the floor with it, then vacuum or take it out and shake.
Try a different brand of liter too.

what I do to avoid that is to put the litter box on a rug and when the kitty comes out of the litter box.. he will have to go on the rug to go elsewhere and the litter from his feet go onto the rug

I've heard that mats work. Not rugs like you have already tried, but plastic mats that have small bristles that take the litter off of their feet. I hope this works for you. Good luck!

Good question - I've tried EVERYTHING. The only thing that works is daily vacuuming of the carpeting. Or sweeping the floors. It sucks, but it's better than stepping on that little in bare feet - it hurts.

Have you thought about changing kitty litter to see if that helps?

some pet stores sell a mat that cleans the paws when they exit the box....it's not perfect but it helps.
