This may be an extremely stupid and simple question, but what exactly does "remove the middle man" refer to? What is the middle man known as? I know, I know...probably a simple one, but I'm not sure.

In the simplest of terms, it means going straight to the source. Go directly to the manufacturer if it is a product. If you are referring to a story - you go to the original person whom it's about. It means by pass everyone else and go to the source.

the middle man is ,, ok I'll give you a scenario,,,, say you wanted to go buy a diamond , the middle man or person would be the Jeweler/Jewelry Store. You remove the "middle man" by going straight to manufacturer,,, rather a silly answer , but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make

It's usually a business term. The "middle man" is a go-between. Example:

I know of some stores in NYC where I can buy necklaces for $5 each. My friend runs a website where she sells lots of things, including jewelry. I sell her these necklaces for $10 each, and then she turns around and sells them on her website for $20 each. I'm a middle man in this case. If she went to NYC and got the necklaces herself, she could save herself my mark-up, and sell them cheaper, or make a higher profit for herself. That would be cutting out the middle-man.

The factory makes the shirt and the store buys it. Then you go in the store and buy it. The store is the middle man. To cut out the middle man you have to buy it from the factory. And it's cheaper at the factory.

As well as the business connotations, it can be used in reference to personal relationships - say you ask a friend to go get the number of a cute guy FOR you - instead of asking the guy yourself. Your friend would be the "middle man."

Go directly to the source. The source is who can truly give you want you want or need. Instead of a middle person that has to get the sources OK.

the manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer (you). Remove the middleman and make more money.....

Is this what you are asking?
