Yes. You can easily negotiate prices at local and privately owned businesses. You have a slimmer chance when purchasing from chain, corporate businesses (ie. Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Ikea, etc.)

Just like anything else, one should attempt to not pay retail, you wouldnt buy a car or a house without negotiation would you?
Your furniture is probably your next biggest investment. Definately negotiate the price, ie; a percetage off, make them throw somthing in for free tc.
