This is largely a big myth. Sure there are real examples of people getting charged for minor scratches but this isn't the general case. I've been leasing all my cars for years and have never paid a dime.
Here's a web site that will help you understand more about leasing: http://www.leaseguide.com/index2.htm

I've leased several cars in the last 5 years. The lessee has certain rules you must follow, in order to not have any return problems!
The company i leased from said i had to return the car with a full tank of gasoline, no body damage, no engine damage, all must be as when i received the car, except for the added mileage.
Before i took the car, i noted any dents or scrapes, or body damage, going over it with the guy in charge, and noting it on the lease agreement. Upon the return, i had him go over it and check it. I put about 500 miles on it, filled the tank before i returned it, and all went well.
now, if you fail to live up to the terms of the lease, you might be charged for some things that aren't covered in the agreement. So--best to do what is required, drive it like it belongs to your father, or you, and bring it back needing nothing, and i think you'll be o.k! If you drive it like a crazy fool, spill drinks on the seats, tear up the interior, and generally treat it like you're a nut, why then, yes, they will treat you badly!

Leasing is a racket invented by car salesmen to move cars that would otherwise be too expensive for the average person to buy.
Its beautiful, all the responsibility for the cars condition and the costs are on you. Technically its his car but he never has to put a dime into it. He tells you how many miles you can drive his car. And you must take the very best care of his car. You pay through the nose for his car. When you lease his car there is a huge up front payment. Then big monthly payments and when your lease is up, he gets his car back in pristine condition and you got nothing. Oh you can still buy his car you practically already paid for with another fat wad of cash. Its a dealer's dream come true!
