I always get depressed and mentally sluggish as the days grow shorter. Do you think this really has a physical cause, or is most of it just all in my head? Isn't it just normal to feel depressed that summer is over and we have 5 months of winter here in the midwest?

I've suffered with S.A.D. for many years. It isn't a nice feeling at all and can be rather brutal to your self esteem and self worth. Despite popular belief this disorder can be rather brutal physically as well as mentally. Some doctors recommend a "light box" or a "special sunlight lamp" for people like us. We are more sensitive to not having the sunlight of longer days than most people. The "light boxes" or special "sunlight lamps" are to provide us with the much needed extra sunlight our brains and bodies crave to elevate our moods. I've looked into the price of such items and they are too expensive for my budget. Another thing you could do is work with bright yarns or bright colors of summer such as painting or coloring or crochet or knitting. This seems to help me out greatly. I urge you to not be too hard on yourself. It is a true ailment and many people whether they choose to admit it or not suffer with this debillatating disease. There are no medicines that I am aware of that can combat your syptoms. Just do your best with working with bright colors during the winter months.

Good luck and I hope I was some what helpful!

Yeah, I'll miss the long sunny days to, but at the same time I love the snow and don't mind trading some sun for snow. Sure it's a drag to go to work in the dark and have the daylight gone by the time I get home. For many the shorter days will cause depression, but who really wants to rely on the weather for their happiness. I love the crisp clear days of Autumn, and sunlight glistening on the trees with branches so heavy with snow they nearly touch the ground, Ah there's a lot of beauty in the fall and winter. Did you know the man who wrote the the song 'I'm dreaming of a White Christmas' was a Wisconsinite who moved to Hawaii? What would life be without seasons? Boring. Besides, I find people much more fulfilling than the weather. You know there's nothing quite like having a hot cup of coffee with a friend you love on a cold winters night. Maybe add a fire in the fireplace.

Am I depressed about winter? Naw, bring it on.

Yes, I suffer from it really bad and live in the Midwest too. It is real and not in your head. The sun makes you feel glad to be alive! I would move to Florida if I could. I take Lexapro and it helps somewhat but not totally. Believe it or not, tanning beds help too!

I get it as well. A lot of it has to do with as days get shorter we have less sun light, S.A.D. can be caused by lack of sunlight which can "brighten" our moods. They actually have artificial lights out to help people who have it.
