The term honeymoon is derived from an ancient custom in which newlyweds, for the first month of their married life drank a bittersweet honeyed wine, called metheglen (wine made from mead and honey, Honey was seen as an aphrodisiac) to bring them good luck in the marriage.. Since a month was known as a "moon," this period of time acquired the name honeymoon.
