First off, I want to give kudos to gothic princess, since she's familiar with the band Poisonblack... I though I was the only person that owned their CDs. My favorites... Primordial Basically, sort-of melodic death metal with a folk twist... but it's a Celtic Folk twist, so that's really unique. I got into this band when discovering obscure death metal bands, and I had no idea I'd fall for them the way I did, as I'm also quite partial to Celtic influences. Imagine Michael Flatley (Lord of the Dance) performing with At The Gates and you begin to get an idea of where I'm going with this. Pantera This goes without saying. No explanation necessary. Pennywise SoCal punk done right. Right up there with Bad Religion, Social Distortion, etc. The key with modern punk is to be able to deliver your music without weighing it down with too much politicized rambling or too much crying about your heartaches. Pennywise holds their beliefs and their DIY/punk ethos true, but the music comes first. Anyone who likes Green Day should listen to Pennywise, then realize all their Green Day albums have a better home in the trash. Honorable Mentions... Prong Beg to Differ was groundbreaking. This band was just as influential in the underground as fellow noisemongers Helmet, Quicksand, and Clutch (early). Porcupine Tree Brilliant modern-day prog... hugely influential in the sounds of Opeth, Neurosis, Tool, and Isis, among others. Pink Floyd I can't stand The Wall, but some of the earlier material is downright brilliant. Tom Petty Iggy Pop I agree with you wholeheartedly about both of them. Cheers
