You can't. For a variey of different reasons.
One: most of them are protected species. Protected by Federal Law, you will be facing FEDERAL charges if you are found with one. In some cases, even having the feathers is illegal. Permits are expensive and difficult to come by. You need to study for years under a master, see below.
Two: they are wild animals and don't make good pets. They belong free. It's not fair to keep it from flying.
Three: you need years of training and experience to keep one so you don't harm it or it doesn't harm you. Look up falconery. It's an ancient art form. Almost like the martial arts. People study for years under a master before getting their first hawk.
Four: it will hurt you and get away if it can. They feel no affection, love, or loyalty to their keepers.
Five: they have special dietary needs and, again, your ignorance can kill it.
Consider one of the pet bird species. Cockatiels and parrots make challenging pets.

Federal laws are very strict about raptors, and you must have a mews license...and study under a licensed falconer. If the laws have not changed, you can not buy a hawk but must capture it on your own. State laws also pertain, but Federal statutes have priority. Raptors are endangered species and even the possession of a road-killed bird is illegal. The fines are very heavy. Contact both State and the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service for further details, and also check with municipal authorities...Falconers are liable for any domesticated bird killed by their bird...i.e. pigeons, chicks, ducklings.

First of all you will have to have falconry tuition and if you live in the USA you will have to get a license, you can't just go out and get a hawk from just anywhere. you need to know how to look after it first, and it isn't just a case of keep it in a cage in your living room and feed it mice you catch in the kitchen. A raptor needs specialist food and housing and are not tame like parrots.
We offer tuition in England and we can help you find someone in America who can help you. Visit

Hawks are illegal to own as pets, they are protected throughout the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Law Act. I believe other countries have similar laws. Licensed Falconers can own birds of prey, but not as pets but as working birds. I suggest you leave wild birds in the wild! They do not make good pets.

The only way to get a hawk, or any other wild animal as a pet for that matter, is to take special courses and get a special license for it.
