Not necessarily, especially if one of the rings is an heirloom.

This is entirely up to you as a couple. They DO still sell matching bands. When you go to the jeweler, just tell them that that is what you're looking for and they will show you what they have.
My fiance and I are doing something kind of fun. We are buying one another's bands in secret, and we will not see them until they are slipped on on our wedding day. We made sure to know what one another likes first, of course.
I say it is best to go with you think you would most enjoy wearing. If he likes titanium and you like platinum, then by all means go with un-matching rings! No one is going to think you're not married if the rings don't match. If matching rings is important to you, then talk to him about it and see if you can reach some sort of compromise.
Good luck!

If you truly want it to match ask your jeweler if they have "trio" sets (thats the engagement ring and both bands all complimentary to each other) otherwise you could get plain matching bands and any engagement ring you want.
However, matching rings is NOT necessary, it is a trend that was adopted more recently... it USED to be that almost all wedding bands were plain and only the engagement ring was ornate.

Both my engagement ring and wedding band are yellow gold and my husbands ring is titanium...they look nothing alike and I think its ok. Titanium would actually match with white gold or platinum. What matters most is that you both like your rings...you'll be wearing them for the rest of your lives.

Your wedding ring is any ring you choose, What if your mother gave you her wedding band, would you discard it because you husbands band did not match. The point is any ring will do or for that matter there is no law that says you have to have a ring, I know part of the wedding service talks about rings but the is symbolism. Do not be held by what is supposed to be. The supposed to be police, were disbanded because of lack of funds

Wear what you like and what is comfortable. You know what it is so it doesn't matter if its the same. My wedding ring was a set with my engagment ring and my husband designed a wedding band with celtic knots and our initials, they are both beautiful and I love showing off how thoughtful his ring is!

This is certainly not necessary. Instead of the traditional gold band, many brides are demanding a band with diamonds, and most dudes aren't into that - they want just a simple, plain band. It is nice, however, if they have matching plain gold bands - that's really classy!

When my fiance and I get married, we will go for white gold because my engagement ring is, and we both like the material very much. But they don't necessarily have to match in any other way, as far as I'm concerned. Do what you want!!!

They can match or not, according to what you want.
Many people are allergic to metal rings and get glass or wooden or other materials for their rings, and some people cannot wear certain types of rings b/c of the type of work they do or b/c they are a musician.
Wedding rings are entirely optional-- they are just a tradition, not a MUST.

Tradition used to be that wedding bands would match - but - times have changed and it's become more of a matter of preference. It shouldn't matter if he has white gold and you have titanium or whatever - the point to the ring is to let people know you're unavailable and should be worn at all times... which is why you ought to wear something you'd like instead of doing the matchy phoo phoo thing... unless, that's what you prefer, of course.
