I am looking to buy (or have someone buy for my birthday...) a camcorder. I would LOVE a hard drive one, but they are too expensive, so I am looking for a MiniDV. I need one that I can use to take clips with and make videos on the computer. I want good quality, but it doesn't have to be anything spectacular, since I don't have a DVD burner anyways.

What are some decent specs that I should look for, and do you have a specific one that you would suggest?

First off, just want to clarify what oldguy63 said. MiniDV is the current standard for tape, and yes, it does give good quality. When he recommended using tape over MiniDV (which is like saying six of one, half a dozen of the other), I think he probably got it confused with DVD camcorders which has a different compression scheme.

To address your question, I have a Canon ZR600 that is easy to use and gives great quality video that I used for some video projects. When I got it it was in the range of $350. In retrospect, after reading some books on digital video, I probably would choose one that has the ability to do audio dubbing, which unfortunately my camera doesn't do.

Definitely look for one with image stabilization (most cameras have them). Digital zoom is not important; you will probably want to turn off the digital and work only with optical zoom anyway.

Good luck in your search.

If you plan to edit your videos you might want to consider a tape instead of a MiniDV, and they are cheaper. The compression used on MiniDV makes editing more difficult. The tapes have a higer quality, are easier to download and to edit. I suggest you look into it before you buy.

I have a Sony Mini DV handicam. I got it for Mothers Day this past spring. I use to video my daughter figure skating. It was the best choice I ever could have made. While the Panosonic is a decent model I feel that Sony holds a stronger product for the DV's. I purchased my handicam on ebay. I saved over $100 compared to retail prices. It also came w/ the warranty. You can't lose here. Check out the link to the Sony here: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-2978-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=2142836&mpre=http%3A//search.ebay.com/search/search.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3Dsony+dcr+hc96+camcorder.

I use my Sony to record my daughter figure skating. I couldn't be happier!

Good luck!
