Wow! Doesn't everybody know that the reason the statue on the top of the Capital faces east is because the sun never sets on Freedom?

It is also by law the highest point in Washington DC (except for the Washington Monument of course).

The statute (the Statute of Freedom) faces east because at the time the Capital was built everything important (Europe) was to the east.

It doesn't seem to make sense because the statute faces away from the National Mall. However, the front side of the White House faces north, also away from the Mall. In addition tourists usually stay to the west of the Capital because, for whatever reason, east of the Capital has become the bad neighborhood in DC. Think of the Capital as a gateway into to Mall, it makes sense that the statute would be facing out.

I think the shift in thinking that the west side is the front side is fairly recent. Presidents are inaugurated in front of the Capital. But, historically the east side was the front side. In fact, all the presidents were inaugurated on the east side up until Ronald Reagan. Reagan, being from California, thought that was dumb because the most of the country is the other way. So, since Reagan, each president has been inaugurated on the west side.

The main facade Capitol Building was originally intended to be what is the "back" side now. The original planners expected Washington to grow out in the other direction, but that was not to be. Even when the statue was taken down for restoration, it was still replaced as it was originally installed, looking out away from the National Mall. You can't change history!

Oh--and actually, the statue represents Freedom, rather than justice!

I may be wrong, but I'm thinking it's because the lady is a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Is it possible that she is facing toward New York?

"In fact, images of the Lady Liberty are replicated throughout these United States. For example, the Goddess Liberty stands atop the U.S. Capitol Building in all her glory and her grandeur."

The object is the Statue of Freedom. It is NOT a replica of the Statue of Liberty. It faces East. Why is that "wrong?"
