I'm taking my friend to Hawaii for 10 days to relax and forget about all the problems he's got going on at home right now. He considers himself a hippie, he smokes pot and would probably like to hang out with other hippies and drink and smoke in a relaxing places that's not too touristy... If he likes it there he said he might not come back for 6 months or a year.. Which island/city is best to take him to?

Dude, go to Paia, on the North shore of Maui. It is famous for being a little artsy-hippie village. All the windsurfers are up there - you can rent a sweet surf villa for a reasonable-for-hawaii price, and if your buddy has any friends he lost in the 60s, they're probably in Paia. Definitely not the touristy Hawaii. My husband and I spent 5 days just outside of Paia, and would go back in a heartbeat. And try the Lilikoi wheat ale - it is a beautiful local beer made from passionfruit. Send us a case!

Go to the big island to Hilo area- lots of hippie/nudist colonies living right outside of Hilo. He can find them best by starting on the other side of the island-Kailua Kona and hanging out at a few coffee shops near Disapearing Sands Beach where all the hippies hang...Good luck to your buddy.
