I don't believe the answer here will be that easy. Each child is unique and what may work on one child may never work on his sibling, You have plenty of time. Try it different ways and even after a time try mixing it up again to see if it helps.

Good luck to both of you.

I'd vote for pull-ups at least until the child catches on the idea of going to the potty well, and then at night until they are night-dry. Once they are fairly well trained, then you can change to big kid underwear. In fact, if you let them pick out their favorite character underwear and use it as the goal- the process goes quicker. I used to have one pack of the favorites and a pack of the plain sort. I would let them put on the favorite first, and then if there was an accident, they'd have to use the plain for the rest of the day.
Pullups at night are best, because they save the sheets and self esteem. Night dry doesn't always happen as quickly as day dry, and diapers make them feel like babies and failures. Pullups are the greatest innovation, I say use them!

Working in the daycare field for many many years and having to potty train so many little ones and one of my own I swear by the real underwear method and for nights and when we are going out for longer trips I would use a pullup, but still hit the bathrooms while we were out. Whichever method you decide to use just stick to it since it tends to confuse children when you are going back and forth between undies, pullups and diapers. This makes potty training harder and longer. Remember too don't go by the age of the child, but when they are mentally and physically ready to try to go on the potty. Shows all the signs of being ready. I like the underwear because it does allow them to feel when they are going. I know many parents don't like it because it is messy, but heh raising a kid isn't easy right? Also if they help pick out the special undies a lot of children are eager to please and don't want to mess up their pretty panties or cool undies. After several times of soiling themselves they might be more apt to use the potty. I say go for the undies when at home and if you have somewhere to go or at nighttime use pullups and not diapers. Once you go on this adventure don't look back to diapers. I can't stress this enough.

I would say for the first few weeks pull ups, pampers makes a new kind that feel cool when wet (pampers fell n learn) then switch to cloth when your little one makes it to the potty at least 50% of the time. Lastly when night time potty training switch from disposable diapers to pull ups, the hold less. Good Luck

After training three kids of my own I will gladly say that real underware would be the way to go. So that they learn the reality of it all and are not fooled by fake imitations that are pretty expensive.

Real underwear all the way! Make a special trip just you and your child to select special, grown up, big kid pants. If he/she picks it out, wearing it and working on this is easy. Yes, they are far grosser sometimes. But those pullups keep them from really "feeling" when they are wet! (yeah, I know that pampers or some co. has these weird mentholated things for that now) Did this with all four.

I tried pull ups on my son, the ones that give cool sensation, but he didn't really care. once i put underwear on him started going to the bathroom within couple of days.
there were few accidents, you just have to accept it. however, now one month later, he always tells me when he needs to use bathroom, he became very responsible and loves the idea of being "a big boy" that goes "toilet" (-:
The only thing i regret that i didn't train him to get up at night; at night we still wear pull ups. and he rarely gets up at night to the bathroom, so every morning he wakes up with full diaper.
on the other hand, i'm pregnant now and i don't have energy to get up every time he needs "to go".
anyways, i suggest you try underwear since it makes them feel more independent and if you stay home with him/her you can always remind your child every half an hour to an hour; and it's not a big deal to change him.
my son goes to nursery with underwear; he did have 3-4 accidents during a little bit more than a month, but now he's doing fine.

I would say it depends a lot on the child, but I definitely wouldn't keep using diapers. My son loved pull-ups and couldn't wait to wear "big boy" underwear. He was motivated. Not all kids are.

speaking as a two year old daycare teacher it is alot easier on you to use pullups. We also reccomend at my daycare useing pullups with underware on top to make them feel like big kids but without all the mess

Actually, it works best to let your little one run around naked. They can't really help but notice bodily functions if they're naked, and though it sounds gross, it works pretty quickly. We actually never had any gross accidents, just a couple of times had to clean up pee. But our son figured out pretty quickly to use his potty chair when he was naked. Eventually, we worked around to using underwear, and now he is fully potty-trained. I know of several other families that this worked for. Good luck!
