I heard of a Cook County Illinois scheme by a phone company, whereby inmates had to call out collect, and if the person accepted the charges, the bill was exorbitant.

Don't accept collect calls.

I do know what Star *57 does, though.

DO NOT DO IT! It is a scam. I just read in the local paper about that. That is all they need you to do, is hit *57, and then you're done. They have access to your phone bill whenever they want it. Report them to your phone company. Ask them for further advice. But for now, keep your fingers away from that phone. Don't get suckered into that.
