He's a mixed Coon and something, by the way. He was a kitten when he followed us out of the woods, and his ears are roundish not pointy like a domestic cat's ears. He's had all his shots and his plumbing is fixed.

Also When we walk our little dog, he likes to follow and lookout for the dog and us, he's chased off at least three pitbulls, two rots, and a few dobbies that were not on leashes and running loose/wild.

it depends on how old they are and what kind of cat it is.if it is as big as this cat at http://www.tubcat.com/ then it is too heavy.

45 lbs is definitely too much. Try some bland (tasteless) food and see if that helps him lose weight. Otherwise, take him to the vet and, as someone else said, make sure they check the thyroid. One of my cats has a thyroid problem, but it's the obvious, she's only 6 lbs, but as healthy and playful as a kitten. They put her on medication as well, and she has actually been gaining weight despite the fact that the vet said she wouldn't because of her age (17 years). It could turn out to be a similar situation with your cat.

When you look down at him you should see a tucked up waist and a slight rib outline. You should be able to feel ribs under a thin layer of fat. If you have to push the fat in to feel ribs, he's too fat. If you look at him from the side and he has hanging flab under his belly or a lot of excess skin under his belly, at the base of his tail, or around his neck and shoulders, he's too fat. Most cats at a normal weight will weigh between 5-10 pounds, but some breeds are bred to weigh more.
If your cat weighs 45 pounds, he is definetely extremely obese not just fat!!! Get him on a weight loss diet and excercise program quickly. You are cutting his life-span in half by letting him be obese, and are causing a lot of extra pain on his bones and joints.

I had a cat back in the US and she weighed 21 pounds. My vet said some cats can have thyroid problems just like humans. But that aside, my three cats now (aged 5), are 6, 8 and 9 pounds.

You have problems.... My cat is 25 lbs and I thought I had problems. an average cat is between 13 and 18 lbs. Male cats are normally bigger than females but 45 lbs is a little much

i just read an article that might help you. if you've heard of the pet magazine called petfolio get it. it's free and should be a a store or gas station.if your live in nevada. or just check their website. there's an article about vinegar. you put a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in their water twice a day and it helps burn their fat.
