I am reminded of a question asking if I would marry a transgendered woman. My remark was essentially, if I go to bed with a Patricia, I better not wake up to a Patrick. Some folks in this neighborhood haven't really settled their place.
If my wife tonight told me she was a lesbian, I would say "That's nice, what's for dinner?" She would be telling me if she were going to leave for her female lover. If she instead said "I want to change my gender, I want to be a man." I would say "That explains a lot, what's for dinner?" I would help her in her transition, but there would come a point when intimacy would simply not be possible--I get my engine revved by women, not men. So there would have to be a separation at some point in the transition.
Now if I told her that I wanted to be a woman, she would say, "That's nice, could you set the table, please?" She could probably live with me far, far better than I could live with him who used to be a her, but there would still likely be an inevitable separation--after all she would then be married to a lesbian.

My first reaction would be 'You're a HE????'.
Seriously though it depends on the situation, there can be many shades of gray. If my girlfriend said she was a lesbian I would say OK and we would work out the best way forward. You can be of one sexual persuasion and still love someone of the other, things can work out.

I would say you have a lot of growing up to do, if you are that naive not to know before hand. Or there is just plain old denial? You decide.
