Absolutely. The Catholic Church knew why it instituted the sacrament of confession. Aside of religious reasons the psychology profession jumped on the bandwagon and is doing extremely well just by listening to people hour after hour.

I believe it is good for the soul. When I pray, I give all my problems to God and I start to feel better after that; lifting the weight off of my back and shoulders.

Yes, but it is a requirement in most cases of willfull sin.

If a person seriously sins, like adultery or something, and lies about it or keeps it covered up, yet prays for forgiveness thinking it'll happen, it will not.
Confession, and in most cases, some form of retribution, reconciliation, and sorrowful remorse is required to achieve God's forgiveness.
