You should call them and get a mailing address so you know where to send payment! And make sure your account number is on everything.

The number on your check should match the account number the CREDIT REPORT shows. Otherwise you may not be able to prove that the item reported was paid. The cancelled check with that account number is your proof.
This is very important because many times the original account is sold to the collection agency who assigns it's own internal account number. THAT is the number that showns up on the report.

I don't totally understand your question, but if you are being contacted by collection agencies, they should be providing the best way for you to pay up (to whom to make the check out to, and the address to mail it to). Writing a personal check is fine, but in the case of this serious, potentially legal matter, a Cashier's Check is better which you can get through a bank, and when you mail it to the correct address you've found, mail it registered/return receipt requested. You need all the proof you can have that you've paid up your debt(s).

What you should do is contact the collection agencies that you owe.
When you get the collector on the phone inform them you want to pay but is there a settlement they are willing to give you. Usually it is 50-60% of what you owe. If it is more than that tell them you don't have alot of money and can they come down more. Most likely they will give you the bottom figure. Remember that the collectors do get paid a commission so the more money they bring in the more they get paid.

Please place your account number on everything you send in. In the memo spot put payment for and then write the item with the account number over or under it. Make sure that you write the number clearly so that there is no mistaking it when they read it. You can mail the check to the collections agency or go to the place that the bill is from to make a payment.

I would contact them first to be sure you send the payment to the correct address. Putting the account # on the check is also important. I sort mail for a bank. You wouldn't believe how many payments never post because we can't teld what they are for. Someone suggested sending the payment Registered - Return Receipt requested. I recomend Certified - Return Receipt requested. It costs $5.50 less than Registered and you still have a paper trail.
