OK...first off my sympathies go out to you. I hope you AND your daughter are getting help and that the person that did this is locked up. Yes, xanax will probably make you sleepy, so your best bet is to take it in the evenings on a full stomach. Just about any medication can be addictive if used improperly. My guess is that your doctor prescribed this for short term use. Basically what xananx does is work on chemical receptors in the brain. When you experience bouts of anxiety, you are experiencing chemical imbalances, hence the feelings of "losing it". The xanax will inhibit these receptors to a more normal stasis making you feel better. Hope this helps, and know that my family will be praying for you and your daughter.

My mother was prescribed xanax for about 7 years. It was awful! Xanax shouldn't be prescribed to anyone. Last year she became so bad that we had to put her in the hospital. The side effects of xanax are terrible and I never want to see anyone coming off of that horrible drug again. Your mom needs a different doctor because she could have a different mental illness that xanax isn't treating. Kind of like putting a band aid on a broken arm. Do a search about mental illness. There are lots of websites that show the signs and symptoms of different mental illnesses.

Xanax is ok for short term use, but many psychiatrists have stopped prescribing it because it is short-acting and addictive. If you take it, do so sporatically and not on a regular basis. Only use it when you have to, so you don't get dependent on it to make you feel better.
Long term regular use of it without tapering off under a Dr's supervision can cause bad physical problem from the addiction. It has been known to cause seizures in people who stopped taking it cold turkey.
The reason I know this is because I had to go into Rehab just to get off of it safely, and be monitored. And I was doing exactly what my Dr. had told me to do, using it for panic and anxiety. I still had to go through alot to get off of it by my own desire.
I hope things get better concerning you're daughter, and I am so sorry for what happened to you.

It is taken when needed, to help you learn to deal with problem not to take it away just to learn to deal with it. I have an anxiety & panic disorders & take Xanax sometimes not all day & sometimes up to 6 a day. It must not be too addictive because I can take it or not. It will help you relax to sleep - slow down your worries. It makes me slightly drowzy but no more than cold medication. Sorry to hear about your daughter, do not suffer more than neccessary. Medicines are helpful, if used as designed.
Many people will think they know better than your doctor but your doctor spent a minmum of 12 years to know if you need medicines. Others have opinions, an Internet or even their experiences - none of these have any value to you. Years of listening or I should say ignoring advice. My doctor has been right everytime or has changed medication if neccessary.

Xanax produces a calming effect. It will make you sleepy. It really depends on how high of a dose you were prescribed. I take it at night in order to wind down to go to sleep. I also take it for anxiety. I take .5mg for anxiety and 1 mg for sleep. It is addictive in that your body gets used to it, and you will continually have to increase the dose. So, the important thing is to take it only as needed. Good luck.

I'd have to ask why a doctor is giving you drugs in order to cope with a really bad memory? Wouldn't it make more sense to work through your pain and emotions, learn to manage and cope with them, and move on? Xanax is an addicitve drug that dulls your thoughts and emotions. If you don't address those emotions and deal with them now, they won't magically disappear with a pill- they'll return as soon as you stop being drugged.
I think a therapist or counselor is a much more productive solution with long-term, permanent benefits.

its a sedative - a cousin of valuim. yes it's addictive, but helpful when taken as prescribed. it could make you sleepy. A friend of mine can take a half of .5mg and pass out - I take 1mg to help with sleep...take with caution until you know how you will react.
