It depends where you are willing to stay an apartment in the "hood" could run you about 650-800 a month. In the lower part of Manhattan you wont find anything decent for under $1,000.

Be careful of craigslist, it's full of phantom listings from certain realtors, who just want you to call them.
In Manhattan, be prepared for small space, for quite a lot. Normal 1bedrooms are mid-range for 2K now.. anything at 1K has a major catch and the market inbetween will have drawbacks of various levels. Consider distance from your work, subway (express or not). What's in the area, safety etc.
Doorman buildings will likely be even higher.
Check out sublet.com or look for listings of people who might want to share multi broom. Otherwise, very few owners want temporary tennants.
Good luck!

Ok.
Manhattan: a one bedroom apartment in an elevator building (ie. a tall one) is about 2400$ minimum. You could get it down to 1500s by taking a tiny little studio apartment in a walkup.
Considering you want to only stay a couple months, you should look for a sublet...
Check Newyork.craigslist.org for an idea......as an example http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sub/219387612.html
That bank account is looking a bit anemic now isnt it?

Oh maybe $1,000 a month rent, that's what you would have for a decent little one.
