I am sometimes shy and sometimes very personable and outgoing, just depends on my mood. I was at our school round table pizza when i saw a girl sitting at a table by herself doing homework. I decided i had nothing to lose by walking up to her and talking to her. I walked up and asked if anyone was sitting next to her, she said no, and i simply said " Hi, my name is John, I just wanted to say i think you are very pretty, whats your name? Was that too forward and direct or is that what all you ladies say you would like guys to do instead of pickup lines? (She said, she had a bf, truth or excuse?)

Hm. I think that depends on the girl, situations, time, place, and many other factors. Some girls like it bold, some find it arrogant. Regardless, I'm sure she was flattered that you thought she was pretty, especially since you came out of knowhere to tell her that.
You can try that on 100 girls, and probably half will dig it, and half will think youre an a**. Most of us can tell whether you're being sincere or making fun of us. Yes thats right...some girls will think your being sarcastic. Don't try the same thing on each girl...we're all different.

i think thatz a nice way to approach a girl n i think she's telling the truth because you did say she's pretty straight out so you were looking more then just friendship so she didn't want to be friendly and give you the wrong idea...
but overall... i think that's a good way to start a convo with a girl... n well... all guys know... girls like compliments...

Oh, I think you did great! I think that's a great way to introduce yourself.
I don't think the boyfriend line was an excuse. I really think that any girl would be flattered by what you did and if she wasn't attached would want to talk to you more.
Try it again (with someone else, I mean)!

well brave action! I think as long as you keep some humor covering your actions you'll be the man! But remember, we like to be flattered, but keep it mysterious, leave something for us to guess about, make yourself interesting! So maybe the what was your name again end, could be a bit to much, leave it at the first part, and think of a something you can jokingly add....

It's hard to say. She might really have a boyfriend... or you may just not be her type. The way you handled it is pretty ideal though... upfront, forward, confident... no stupid lines or games. Good for you that you put yourself out there!! I imagine it's not easy for guys.

it was probably an excuse... next time ask if you can sit there before you tell her shes pretty yes we like to hear it but sometimes if you do it wrong girls just think that you want a piece of ***.

Here's how it could've been better:
You: "Hi, I'm John. What's your name?"
(she responds)
You: "That's a beautiful name"
(she responds)
You: "...and you have the most captivating eyes I've ever seen."
...and then the conversation continues.
