This question assumes a western culture where you have a choice...I certainly mean no harm to oppressed woman in Islamic countries, who, outside their state of oppresion, might very well chose to join civilization instead of being a Muslimah.
HONEST REPLIES ONLY ---
My honest experience is, that the most insecure woman, who are muslim and live in the west, chose to wear hijab. Typically, a woman who is confident and also still pridefully clings to some part of her Islamic upbringing, will not wear a hijab.
Insecure woman can be good-looking, although, to be frank, every western muslim woman (except one woman I saw on ET) I have ever seen in Hijab has been honest-to-goodness hideous.

I live in the Middle East. And I do have a choice to wear the hijab or not.
I choose to wear it.
God has commanded that I wear it and so I do.
(Please let's not get into the whole 'translation' of Quranic verses and how it doesn't explicitly state that a woman should cover herself. Read the Arabic Quran, with out English translation, and then come back and pester me about it- if you must!)
I am not insecure. Tell me of what could I be insecure?Shall I be bothered that I'm not upto current fashion standards? Shall I be bothered that I don't have men making lewd statements and conducts around me?
Should I be insecure because there are people (like yourself) that try to demean my act of worship and me?I have no idea of what I should be insecure about!!!!
I am very confident! In fact, I bet that I'm more confident thatn half of the women you know. And no, not because of the hijab I wear. Rather that it only a small part of my religion. Instead I am proud and confident because of the manners, traditions, and truths that my religion has instilled in me.

I agree with Blackacre that you're commenting on a fashion statement. And in my experience being a woman and knowing other women, the more a woman shows of her body, puts on make-up, etc, the more insecure she is. Because she's seeking validation and approval from the opposite sex on how she looks. It's the secure women who cover up (wear conservative clothes more often).

Well thanks for your honest question which is Good.
from my honest experience
Here in Islamic country like Syria, I see many Muslim woman who are high educated and had their own business, rich, very practical, secure and confident plus wearing al hejab.
in other hand i see many Muslim woman who don't wear al hejab they are practical, high educated, secure and confident.
and you can see many Girls, who wear or not wear Al-heejab, they are so weak personality, don't study, and insecure person.
so we can't take your theory as a rule.
anyway when i was in a western country that claim democracy and free choice like France..
I found the Muslim female who don't have strong personality and strong faith, took off the hejab because they don't want to feel that racism against them (like they say they are terrorist just cause they wear this small cover)
But the strong personality girls, they ignore all the negative thoughts about them and keep putting their hejab facing a community who want to take that cover which was from her choice, just because they don't like it, plus she lives normally and merge inside the community.
Alhejab is a piece of cloth to cover the hair.
I don't see the relation between this Cover and the personality...
the personality is related to something else...like how this kid were raised, is he a person who like to communicate with people...etc..
If you have discoverd this reason for the insecure muslim felmale..
What is the reason for insecure Christians or Athlist females in west.
The problem with western community is they link every thing about islam with the individual actions, like if a muslim rape a woman they say it's islam but if 1000 chrisitian burned million of black people...not even a word will be said to chrisitianity cause they are well known about christianity and the soulution will be for me, is to make the western people more educated about islam as a culture...
wearing it or not, is totally free choice for woman cause in Islam the Quran didn't specify some one to apply the order of God to wear a Hejab and This is the only order that didn't linked with punishment for not following it, like if you drink in Islam there is a punishment, but if the woman didn't wear al hejab God don't put a punishment and didn't tell any one to force the girl to put it...so it's totally between the woman and the God.

I am Turkish and i live in Turkey which is a more or less Islamic country.. we also have the right choose whether we wear it or not.
i don't... but my mother does.. i think it has nothing to do with being secure or insecure. It's just because of different beliefs.

But by your reasoning, the more crosses a Christian woman has in her home, the more insecure and less attractive she is... unless you are claiming that women in teh West who wear the Hijab do so only to cover themselves because they believe they are unattractive, in which case one must onder about Western women who choose to wear jogging outfits to the grocery store, or baggy pants...
Your question really has nothing to do with religion: it is a fashion statement about your assumptions about the type of women who would wear a "covering" garment.

I think that even in western world there is most likely an element of oppression however, just because you take the uncivilized religion and move it to the civilized world that does not mean you cause it to take on the attitudes of civilized humans. It would very likely cause them to be ostracized in their communities if they don't adhere strongly enough to the rules in place.

Well...think it could be someone that is truly committed to the culture of their homeland. Or...could be that it the woman may find it easier to get ready in the morning!
Or...could be that she is just insecure, but think that would be the last reason.
