does not work well

The epidural is an anti-inflammatory that takes away swelling and so helps relieve some of the pressure on the sciatic nerve. It helped me lots but it is NOT a repair of the disc. You will always have to be careful ( restricted lifting etc. ) until such time as a way is found to repair the disc. It helps the inflammation but is not a permanent fix.

It totally depends on the person. I had the 3 epidural shots and they did not work for me. My injury is L3 L4 and L5. What did give me some relief was the nerve root blocks, where you are actually put under and they shoot the injection into your nerve. I had 3 of those and started doing Pilate's and I feel pretty good almost 3 years later.

I just had one yesterday and so far it has been hell to pay!Unless I feel a WHOLE LOT better in a couple days I would never do that again! It would have to be a miracle drug and make me feel like dancing!! It's all I can do to get up and down.It was a bad experience. They tried 3 times to get the IV in ,didn't happen. They decided to give me the meds in the hip, that took 2 more shots, and then the 4 in my back.Needless to say I didn't have much fun!! You can email me in a couple and I will tell you if it gets better ,if you like.Good luck in what ever you decide to do.

I HAVE HAD 3 INJECTIONS FOR AN L5 S1 HERNIATED DISC. THE FIRST 2 WERE USELESS AND THE 3RD WAS A GODSEND. THE 3RD ONE CURLED MY TOES WITH PAIN DURING INJECTION, BUT IT HAS BEEN 5 MONTHS SINCE AND I'M MOSTLY PAIN FREE.
