not sure about prevention, but if you can get an aloe plant, break off one of the leaves, and rub it on the wound site...it not only stops itching, it minimizes scarring impressively
i had surgery on top of my left wrist..dr commented to me how great my scar looked-barely visible- i told him it was the aloe! and him... :-) my son gets keloid scars...he had to take meds for itching so he didn't end up with them all over!! don't scratch if you are prone to that type of scarring

Ask your doctor about the following options:
1) post operative cortisone injections
2) compression
3) pulse dye laser (can't say for sure if it would help with keloids, some studies have shown it to be effective in scar healing.
4) imiquimod cream

Try using Aloe Vera.

Make sure to keep it moisturized properly and get some pure vitamin E oil to rub on it.
