I have been trying to teach my dog to play fetch. He seems to have most of the concept down until it comes to letting go of the toy to allow me to throw it again. He does a kind of growl and lunches for the toy (in this case a kong double ended tennis ball thingy) and has nipped me a few times when we are both reaching for it at the same time.

I have tried "leave it" which he does but as soon as i say "ok" he is reaching and growling again.

He seems to love fetch...but as soon as he does that behavior i stop playing with him

Try trading the "fetch" toy with a treat, have him sit and then show him/her the treat. and trade.... good luck

There is an actual training process for teaching "drop" or "leave it", however the two commands actually have different meanings.

I teach "drop" as the first step in a process called Force Fetch (wont get into a do or don't do on FF), and rather than write about 6 pages of information here, I would suggest going to http://www.dobbsdogs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=512&zenid=025c305a1ea93070bf46dcf5405ff5bdand get the vidio "Trained Retrieve: "hold" and "fetch"."
