infections are always cause by microorganisms.
or do you want to know how you get it? an urinary tract infection can be anywhere from the kidneys to the ureters to the bladder to the urethra. Common organisms that cause UTIs include: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Less common organisms include Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterococcus spp. UTIs are most common in sexually active women, and increase in diabetics and people with sickle-cell disease or anatomical malformations of the urinary tract. Women are more prone to UTIs than males because in females, the urethra is much shorter and closer to the anus than in males. The article on vulvovaginal health has some health tips for preventing UTIs. A common cause of UTI is an increase in sexual activity, such as vigorous sexual intercourse with a new partner. The term "honeymoon cystitis", although somewhat demeaning, has been applied to this phenomenon.

Usually a bacteria. They are most common in women and can occur a lot as a superinfection after a course of anti-biotics which depleat a person's normal flora and allow for overgrowth of certain organisms. A good way to try to prevent them is to keep yourself clean and dry and also to drink a lot of water, which keeps the kidneys processing fluids and therefore keeps flushing out your urinary tract so that it is harder for the bacteria to fester in there. Some people may be more prone to UTI's because of the layout of their urinary tract. Hope this helped out some. Here's a link for more info:
