Every state is different but in MS if you assault the K9 police dog you get 50 years in prison while you only get 30 years for assaulting the officer. If you kill the K9 you get death just like if you kill anyone.

The K-9 Is considered a Police Officer. So, yes the Penalties are the same.

If a canine is harmed in the line of duty--the penalty is the same.
A canine is considered an officer of the law, also!
All canines are raised from pups usually by the canine handler--thousands of dollars are spent for the training of these animals--
When the animals are old or have been seriously injured they go to a retirement home or can be sold as a pet to a respectful family! (Isn't it wonderful?)

If you kill a K-9....believe it or not that dog is considered a police officer! You kill an officer, you're doing SERIOUS TIME, lucky if you get out in 20 years......however, mitigating or extenuating circumstances still apply no matter what, which means if that dog was shredding the offender, he'll get less time due to possible loss of life....his. If the offender approached the dog and killed it "just because"..... then it's pre-meditated murder....LIFE, no parole......

Not in all places. Many states have passed laws to this effect, but it is not universal yet.
