abuse?
children need a good spanking now and then. I am not saying to spank them or mame them for life... but a good spanking will benefit them in the long run.
There was a study just recently released where they interviewed many corporate ceo's and many of them admitted to being spanked and said that it actually helped them.

When I was young my father would sometimes spank me on the butt with his hand. He would pull my pants down to spank it bare. I guess that stopped at around age 8 or so. I got spanked with a wooden spoon a couple of times. I don't remember my mom dishing out the same, but she may have.
My step-mother gave her kids "the belt" from time to time. A whip to the butt with a belt. I guess that ended around the same age for them. She had also made them "wash their mouths out with soap" if they swore too much. Basically they just had to keep a bar of soap in their mouth for a minute or so.
I don't agree with those people that say that spanking did them well. They don't know what they're talking about. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's abusive to spank, but it's definitely not constructive. It's more like the parents have no idea what to do and are just copying what they learnt from their own parents.

Sticks from a coconut tree. Three of those together whacked at your bare skin is worst than a whole bunch.... I know what I'm talking about- trust me. My dad was chief of police. His and our Mom's policy was to only spank us until a certain age..... and to never hit the head or cause injury. I don't think the spanking affected me other than stopping me to continue the behavior that wasn't ok. My Dad always made it clear that the behavior wasn't appreciated, not me. I loved my dad dearly. In fact my brother who was never spanked ... ever!... later said- before he committed suicide at 23- that he wished he was being spanked at some point while growing up. Apparently he said this to one of his friends.
I use other disciplinary measures with my own kids.... but I do give a whack on their behind with the palm of my hand when they do things that endanger their lives... like crossing the street without looking left and right... it's more of a reflex reaction- not planned ... and not on bare skin.

When I was a kid I was spanked with the back of hairbrush--usually on my bare butt. My kids get spanked the same way--but with a paddle specifically designed for the purpose.
I certainly do not consider it abuse.I grew up just fine--and I would not do it as a mother if I did not think it was in my kids' best interest. But I am convinced it is.
