Haghia Sophia used to be the largest Christian Church in the world until 1453 when it became a mosque. Today, Haghia Sophia is a museum. Yet, the Greeks in America feel like they need to build replicas of Haghia Sophia in America even though there are more pressing needs among the flock and the rest of society as a whole. Many Greek Orthodox communities, some teetering on the brink of spiritual and financial death, are embarking on $20 Million whirlwind construction schemes. That exact question arises in my mind every time I go to Mexico or any country where the Roman Catholic church has elaborate cathedrals, that the shoeless poor pass by and put their last few pesos into, while going hungry. Such is the nature of organized religion. They promise that you won't be hungry in the afterlife.
