well you really need to tell him before you go because if you back then you will be mad at yourself for the whole time you are gone and you should tell him like the last day of school that you will see him before you leave so even if he doesn't ask you out or doesn't like you he will be thinking of you the whole and he may start to like you and if he doesn't like you when you come back then it awkwardness will have gone away and you guys can still be best friends hope it helps:)

You should tell him how you really feel before you leave. If you don't tell him and you wait for a really long time or until you get back he will have a girlfriend and you will never have a chance with him unless they brake up. So don't be scared just tell him before you leave.
